While on this theme, I just have to include a work of another of my graphics ‘Heroes’ of Illustration and Design – Roger Dean.

Designing for rock groups, book and LP covers in the 70s/80s, Roger produced some really stunning and original work, that still influences Illustration and Conceptual Design for movies and the gaming industry today.

He created an almost unique sense of other-worldly space, and his strength of design and stunning balance of detail and empty space is something we certainly could do with more of now.

Can you imagine the result if this man were available to the present-day gaming industry – not to mention Hollywood (which has already borrowed heavily from his ideas)?

Just by way of a complete change, and because I’ve been doing some work for my own website on my ‘Heroes’ of Illustration and Design, I’m going to share a piece from the works of Samuel Palmer, a 19th C British artist much influenced by William Blake – and like Blake, the composition of his best works took on an almost mystical quality.

His work centers mainly around rural life in southern England – tending flocks of sheep, growing and harvesting corn, the natural forms of hillsides and clouds, and the people of this environment.  There is an element of Pieter Bruegel in the subject-matter, but Palmer’s treatment of his subject is highly individual.

What fascinates me most is his style, and the way the ingredients in his drawings and paintings are ‘managed’ to convey a definite sense of mystery and meaningfulness within the subject-matter.  Though one might look upon the subjects as mundane and ‘simple’, Palmer invests them with a kind of wondrous magnificence – it’s something we in the technological present could do with revisiting.

Hard to describe in words, but very plain to see in the artworks.

Tickets for the FZD School of Design‘s Master Designer Workshop 2012 to be held in Singapore on February 04-05 are now sold out.

Master Designers Sang Jun Lee, Kekai Kotaki, Daniel Dociu and Feng Zhu will be presenting and demonstrating styles and techniques during the 2 day workshop, and there will be a Q&A time at the end.
